Frequently Asked Questions
Straightforward answers to the questions parents ask most.
Choosing a homeschool community for high school comes with important questions. Below you’ll find clear, honest answers to the topics parents ask us about most—so you can understand how The Vine Collective works and whether it’s the right fit for your family.
Is this a school?
No, the Vine Collective is not a school. We are a community that has provided a curriculum and a space for your student to gather with friends and have great conversations. You retain full ownership and responsibility over your homeschool.
Who assigns grades?
Parents ultimately grade their students, however facilitators will provide a rubric on how to grade papers written by their students, and for in-class activities and presentations (which parents will not be present for), facilitators will provide a suggested grade to pass along to parents, although parents make the ultimate decision on what grade to assign their student.
Can students join mid-year?
If there is room in the class (we will likely limit each grade level class to 10 students in order to keep a close-knit environment), the facilitator can choose to allow a student to join mid-year.
What about students with learning differences?
We know that each person is fearfully and wonderfully made, and setting students up for success is a main driver to how we’ve developed our curriculum. One of the benefits of homeschooling is that parents have the freedom to decide what their students can and should do for their schooling. We welcome all learning differences to our program, however we cannot provide specialized care and attention to individual students based on their needs, nor can we allow students to be disruptive in class, for the sake of the experience of the rest of the students in class. While parents can choose to alter our curriculum to meet their student’s needs, there is an expectation that they be able to participate in all subjects during class time. If this is a concern of yours, please make sure to talk this through with your facilitator at your time of inquiry.
Is homework required?
Each week, there will be clear expectations of what needs to be done at home throughout the week. We don’t necessarily like the term “homework” but given that 4 of the 5 school days will be done at home, it’s necessary that there will be work done on those days.
